How Often Should I Change My Oil?
here is a common misconception that you need to change your oil as soon as it looks dirty. While changing your oil at the proper intervals is one of the most important parts of preventative maintenance, it’s also important to know when those intervals are.
As oil lubricates your engine, it naturally collects contaminants from combustion that result in a darker hue. It doesn’t matter if you use synthetic or regular (“dino”) oil, you can’t find out when to change your oil just by looking at your dipstick.
While you can always change your oil on your own, Kelowna Nissan’s oil change service will get you back on the road fast without breaking the bank.
When Do You Need to Change Your Oil?
Older vehicles once required oil changes every 5,000 kilometers or three months, but this standard no longer applies to many modern vehicles. Improvements in both engine and oil manufacturing have increased service intervals dramatically. But your oil change intervals will still depend on your personal driving habits and your vehicle.
If your vehicle regularly operates in “extreme conditions,” then you will need to have your oil changed more often. Extreme conditions include things like driving regularly in stop-and-go traffic (particularly in cold weather) and driving in very dusty conditions. If you mostly use your car for occasional longer trips, it is acceptable to wait six months or more to change the oil.
It’s important to consider your vehicle’s warranty. Your Owner’s Manual will have details on the maintenance intervals for your Nissan Vehicle. If you can’t find you owner’s manual and are unsure when your next oil change is due, feel free to contact Kelowna Nissan and our certified technicians would be happy to help you.
